Barnsley 0 United 2

United are another step closer to retaining the Carling Cup after seeing off a spirited challenge from Championship side Barnsley.

The Reds made the perfect start at Oakwell, taking a sixth-minute lead when Danny Welbeck buried a free header from Anderson’s right-wing corner. A masterclass in finishing from Michael Owen early in the second half sealed a place in the last eight of the competition, despite Gary Neville's red card then reducing United to ten men.

The night was also notable for Gabriel Obertan's senior debut, more than three months after signing for United. The Frenchman completed a full 90 minutes, switching from one flank to another and showing flashes of promise.

Obertan started on the right and helped to create United's early breakthrough with a jinking run on that flank. The corner he forced was whipped in by Anderson and although he had defenders on either side of him, Welbeck was unchallenged as he nodded the ball past former United goalkeeper Luke Steele.

The cool-as-you-like youngster nearly had a second reason to show us his Usain Bolt style celebration when he killed a ball into the Barnsley box with a sublime first touch and fired in a low strike that Steele did well to save. It was an impressive move, even if Owen was in a position that cried out for a pass rather than a shot from Welbeck. A third chance for Welbeck was more difficult, his header sailing high and wide from Obertan's cross.

Barcelona In Shock £85m Swoop For Manchester United Star Wayne Rooney - Report

Barcelona In Shock £85m Swoop For Manchester United Star Wayne Rooney - Report

The England striker appears to have impressed the Catalan side.....

Barcelona are preparing to launch a world record £85 million raid for Manchester United's superstar striker Wayne Rooney, according to the News of the World.

The tabloid claims that the Camp Nou board hopes to exploit the Red Devils' financial concerns in order to top Real Madrid's £80m purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson is yet to reinvest the money brought in from his Portuguese protege's departure, and it is thought that the Old Trafford club's debts are preventing him from doing so.

Meanwhile, with Rooney set to enter the 2010 World Cup as England's marquee player, Barca believe his arrival next summer would be just the marketing leveller needed after Los Galacticos output in the last transfer window.

However, the Spanish giants are aware of the difficulties in orchestrating such a signing - the main problem being that the player himself has often expressed his desire to remain at United for the rest of his career.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old's wife, Colleen, recently gave birth to the pair's first child, and so he would be naturally wary of destabilising his young family by moving abroad.

Summer signing is the ace in the pack for Chelsea clash

The clash of the Premier League heavyweights on Sunday could see some French flair tip the scales in favour of Manchester United.

Gabriel Obertan has excelled in the red shirt since being brought in by Sir Alex Ferguson from Bordeaux this summer. Expressive on the ball and in sync with his team-mates, the 20-year-old has impressed since making his bow against Barnsley a fortnight ago.

United meet Chelsea in the crunch match at Stamford Bridge this weekend. The Scot has a plethora of options available to combat the side rejuvenated by Carlo Ancelotti.

At the forefront of his mind will be the hit-and-miss performance against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night. Highs and lows were in frequent supply, as United sunk to 3-1 down, before launching a cavalry charge to get back on level footing.

At the forefront of the fightback was Obertan. Brought on with 10 minutes to go, he tricked his way past the Russian rearguard with regularity.

Before his introduction, Nani failed to make any impression from out wide. As usual, he danced his way past his marker before playing a different tune than Michael Owen and Federico Macheda when it came to flinging in the final ball.

Nani fired in United's opener in the Charity Shield clash against Chelsea, but his errant form since hinders his hopes of excelling in the Stamford Bridge pressure cooker where precision cannot be at a premium.

The United supremo knows he will have to combat the Blues' intimidating strength through the middle of the pitch.

One solution is to select a midfield three of Anderson, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs, with Dimitar Berbatov made to plough a lone furrow up front as Wayne Rooney will be moved to the left.

Ferguson has never been scared to attack a weakness in the opposition. As dominant as the hosts are in the centre, space is available out wide.

Jose Bosingwa's injury has stemmed their attacking threat from the right. A forward thinking left winger could be just the ticket to success as less defensive discipline will be needed to combat the rampaging Portuguese.

In to the fray could come Obertan. Whether from the start or as a latecomer he has exhibited the application and inspiration necessary to unsettle the Premier League pacesetters.

United have the chance to strike a blow in the title race and the latest addition to the wide ranks is the man to deliver the knockout shot.

Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Reveals He Has Had Offers To Manage Abroad

Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Reveals He Has Had Offers To Manage Abroad

Scot admits he had opportunities to leave Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that several foreign clubs have approached him in the past with a view to managing them, yet he has never wanted to leave Manchester United.

The Scot arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 and has gone on to claim enormous success, guiding the Red Devils to 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League wins.

His track record is unrivalled in the modern game and, speaking to the News of the World, Sir Alex admitted it had tempted several clubs to approach him.

I've had offers from clubs to go abroad, but I've never been tempted by them," admitted the 67-year-old.

"I am not going on record to say who they are, but you'd be surprised by the names.

"It flies over your head and you get on with life. You don't leave Manchester United."

Next up for Ferguson is a trip to face Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, a ground on which he has failed to win in the Premier League since 2002.

Play-off perils

Egyptian and Algerian players in a heated moment
The Egyptians and Algerians didn't impress Alan Green
I wasn't commentating on any of the play-off games in mid-week but I made sure I watched Egypt against Algeria. We knew it would be tense – games between those two always are – but I've never witnessed, in over thirty years of describing football on radio or television, two teams so contemptuous of playing the game honestly.
It was a disgrace. Any tackle even bordering on a foul – and most weren't – provoked scenes of players supposedly writhing in agony.
The Egyptians were, certainly early on, the worst offenders but the player whose behaviour really stuck in my throat was the Algerian goalkeeper Chaouchi. In the second half, as his team successfully held on to their lead, he would catch the ball and then, without an opponent in sight, fall to the ground, usually feigning injury: pathetic.
It was almost as pathetic as FIFA's decision to make Eddy Maillet of the Seychelles the referee for such a crucial fixture.
Hand of Henry
Thierry Henry's handball
Henry's reputation will suffer as a result of this
And then there was Thierry Henry of France. Rather like Maradona and his 'Hand of God' goal in 1986, I'm not sure I will ever forgive Thierry Henry for his cheating against Ireland in Paris on Wednesday night. I had thought better of him.
In my view, like the Argentine, Henry's status as a 'great' footballer will now always be tainted.
How can you celebrate a goal when you know that you've cheated? How did he have the nerve to sit down on the pitch with Richard Dunne afterwards? How did the Irish defender resist the urge to smack the Frenchman in the face?
Two things: personally, the way I feel at the moment, I might be tempted to boo Henry next summer in South Africa. And, please, hands up any fool out there who is STILL against the use of video technology.
