The Netherlands became the first team to book their place in the Round of 16 after their 1-0 victory over Japan and Denmark’s defeat of Cameroon later on Saturday. With Cameroon now the first team eliminated after their two losses, Japan and Denmark – currently divided by goal difference alone – will fight it out to join the Dutch in the last 16 when they conclude their group campaign in Rustenburg on Thursday.

2. Japan: 3 pts; GD 0; one goal scored
3. Denmark: 3 pts; GD -1; two goals scored
4. Cameroon: 0 pts; GD -2; one goal scored

Qualifying criteria
According the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
Permutations
– The Netherlands will be guaranteed first place in the group if they win or draw against Cameroon.
– If the Netherlands lose to Cameroon, Denmark or Japan could overtake them at the top with a victory and a significant swing in goal difference.
– If Japan win or draw against Denmark, they will advance to the last 16.
– Denmark have to beat Japan as their goal difference is inferior.
